[00:00:00] So I was noticing that many of you were not very comfortable in your posture. So it’s very important that we find a posture in which we can really relax completely. Seating posture is the best if you can find that balance, where you have stability, where your knees are touching the ground or the cushion, or you put the cushions below your knees, and you can really relax there. But if your knees are a little raised and your lower back is making tension, you will not be able to release and relax completely. So try using more cushions and raising a little bit so that your lower back doesn’t have too much tension and that your knees go down. I find this posture a bit uncomfortable myself because I’m used to sitting cross-legged, but not because of my knee. I have to sit like this.
[00:01:03] For many or for some of you sitting in the chair his best… or sitting with a cushion in your back and with a wall behind. Try to find different ways. Also, if your spine is not straight, the long and the subtle winds will be a little bit difficult to flow, so you will not have a good relaxation. So it’s important that your spine is straight and then you raise your chest out, but that you really release all the muscles around the column.
[00:01:41] And I notice that some of you your head goes back or goes front. If your head goes back that will create discoursivity, agitation in your mind. If your your head is down you will start feeling sleepy and experiencing laxity and dulness. So it’s important that you find the right posture, Helen can help for correcting your posture If you ask her for advise whenever you can…
[00:02:09] She can help you check if it is correct or not. And overall, you have to feel it, you have to find that point where you feel completely relax, where your vertebra are aligned and that you can just release your body and forget about it.
[00:02:34] This is a big problem: lung. And especially in a long retreat, we don’t want to get lung. Lung is the wind in the body body but it is also a condition we call lung this condition where your wind is already kind of, up, stuck somewhere. Sometimes you feel a pressure in your heart, sometimes you feel like tightness in the head, and is no good because you can take a long time to really sit. And especially westerner’s nowadays, they go to retreats, they practice very intensively without relaxing, and then they get all disturbed. This can create a lot of imbalances, a lot of problems. So it’s very important, really, that you learn to to relax, to be able to release that tension and bring that energy down.
[00:03:32] And so maybe as we go deeper into the retreat, you will become more aware of your subtle body. You will start feeling some tinglings, some heat, some sensations, some movements inside your body. And that’s the wind that is balancing, this prana that is balancing. So allow it to do that, it’s movement to find the balance, but always from a place of relaxation and not from pushing too hard, not from forcing yourself. OK?.
[00:04:07] And so I don’t know if everybody got to your printed material. Yeah. There was in the back. But I haven’t seen any more. So I guess everybody has one.
[00:04:20] Well, if not, you can ask for it.
[00:04:24] But inside we have this, some a few advice for for samatha retreat that I sent. And let’s just go over it. This is advice that works for a group retreat and also for a solitary retreat. And these are things we want to put attention from the beginning, so I’m going to review them with you. So, one is the schedule. It’s good to have a schedule, but also be flexible with it. When you do your own retreat, it’s good to do a personal schedulle and then start modifying according to your needs. And here we are going to have a little bit more of a fix schedulle, but also in the interviews we’re going to try to see if it’s working for you or what kind of adaptation we can do for you.
[00:05:16] It’s nice to have one day a week without any schedule to release the attachment to the clock a little, knowing that you have a day set aside for relaxing health one, to be more disciplined the rest of the time. Well, this time we have not we don’t have a free day.
[00:05:37] Well, think about it. Well, we’ll see how you feel. Maybe we’ll have a day without teaching and without formal schedule but then you can still medicate. That’s a good idea. And also when you do it in your own retreat is good.
[00:05:57] Some people enjoy incorporating two or more sessions a day of the four inmensurables in the practice, while others simply enjoy them more informally in between sessions. Well, we will do some sessions of the four inmensurables and for example today we did the drop meditation in combination with the lovingkindness.
[00:06:15] You know that traditional Tibetan has four inmensurables for very fast. So it’s good if you’re going to do them like a very short session, the four of them to do a little bit of a longer pause and reflect on them. Because these four inmensurables will really benefit you a lot in retreat. Otherwise the mind, just doing Shamata becomes a little bit dry. You need to develop the qualities of the heart too…
[00:06:46] Then the second point is energy lung. So we talked already about that. We have to release the pressure. This just doesn’t mean we have to be lazy and just like I need to relax at very sleep all day, because that’s not the point. The point is that we are awake, but actually our bodies, as if it’s sleeping, as relaxes when we sleep. Because normally we go to sleep, we release the lung, it goes down, and then in the morning we start agitated again and it goes up. So we want to keep that feeling of like a body tha is slipping. Would you wake up and continue doing your activities in that same feeling of complete ease.
[00:07:34] Then loving kindness for oneself, we did loving kindness now for a little bit, a very short session, but just that you remember: every time you feel tightness or feel disturbed and certainly you’re going to pass through two months during the retreat because it’s still months and you know, you arbitrated to experiencing all kinds of emotions in a period of two months. We’ll know that. So you’re probably going to pass through all of your habitual emotions. Sometimes you will feel happy, depressed, bored. Some days you will want to leave, some days you will feel like this is a great pleasure on the retreat to finish… Like all kinds of things will happen. But the idea is to allow them to come and pass, and always come back to loving kindness for yourself and not pushing too hard. Also not letting yourself just be lazy and sleepy and dull because in your cultivated a habit of dullness and that’s stupid meditation.
[00:08:41] So, release the expectations of progressing in samatha. The best thing we can do is to gather the conditions are led to see it grow at its own rhythm. And this is something very difficult for us in the West to do because well, now in the west and in the east everybody, because I mean in the modern society because we feel we have to do something. If we’re not producing or doing or achieving, then what is the point?. So, it’s very you see that we go to retreats and the teachers emphasis a little bit: Yea, you have to cultivate relaxation.., And then a solidly and then vividness and then… but you have to achieve samatha, and then you just get into that like that’s the part you listen. Like this is that the real deal: You have to achieve Samatha and them everything will be better or, I don’t know, I will achieve enlighten or liberation or I’ll be perfect. I do not know, you’ll get all these ideas and then just try very hard to achieve samatha and then it backfires, because it’s not like that.
[00:09:59] The more you have expectations, the less progress. So just release expectation is the best thing you can do is to keep practicing because it has benefits for your body, for your mind, for your life. And that’s the important thing.
[00:10:18] The duration of the sessions we talked already about to ghatikas. But you can also divide your sessions into duration of like a ghatika you can divide it into sessions of five minutes. Then a little rest, all the five minutes, and you rest. If you feel you have a lot of dullness, you could try micro sessions. So let’s say I’m going to meditate very sharp and clear for two minutes and then rest one, and then two minutes and rest one. So do the like a short session with this alternation and actually what you’re doing is that when you’re supposed to rest is the best meditation because it’s when you release completely, But because you dispense a very short time in between, you’re actually not getting distracted. So that’s something you can try to. Sometimes if you feel you’re getting very sleepy or very not wanting to do this a long session, you can make my concessions like maybe 10 minutes and then you break it into these little parts and then you take a rest.
[00:11:31] So it’s a matter of having short sessions with good quality rather than long sessions where you’re cultivating a habit of just falling sleep or you’re restless and you’re just moving around and feeling uncomfortable. Then better take a little break, maybe walk a little bit or do that thing that is disturbing you, because maybe some thought that you have to do something or you have to write down something very important,
[00:11:57] So I’m not encouraging you to interrupt your sessions, like very frequently, because also that’s a risk if you hear this. But just to be wise with yourself and notice when it’s important to do it shorter. And then we have to listen to the mind, I already said that. I learned that the stuffing decision is all about finding balance. So again, this Drope Rimpoche, a great teacher. I have these two friends who are a couple and one of them is. It’s like she is very active, she wants to do it, she wants to try to achieve, and he is like too relax. He’s just like....Thus, he push himself to do more than necessary. And so give the teacher different instructions to each of them. So to her he would instruct her more to get relaxed and to him to put more effort.
[00:13:09] So you have to be your own teacher and find that balance. But always try to be more on their side of relaxation. But you have to be doing this balancing act and finding what is right for you.
[00:13:27] Then silence is very helpful avoid communicating and writing with others because that’s like talking too… sometimes we start writing notes and then they become letters and then we’re just talking about writing. So tell us if it’s really important. You can send the message, but try the conceptually take two and… Be careful when you talk, because it’s easy to generate many unnecessary dialogues, so many of you, maybe you will try to talk in secret, especially if your friends or family or relatives… Just be very mindful because, we want to take her of our minds and this little discourse as possible, and also to help our friends, our companions here to do the same. So try not to talk to others, because they are doing their effort to be also inside and in retreat. And if you start the conversation and then the other replies, then the conversation gets interest and then go on.
[00:14:47] Well, this is now for here. It’s in case you’re doing like a group retreat in a house with your friends, and having discussion sessions once a week. You can actually book a time for talking with them, because if you’re managing a retreat on your own with some friends, like renting our house… after the Samatha project some friends and I went into a retreat in Colorado next to the retreat centre to continue in retreat, while the other retreat and the other retreat and so, the control group were having their own retreat.
[00:15:23] And it is crazy because during you are at a retreat but you’re also kind of managing the place and you have to sometimes talk about like things about the maintenance of the house or things. So I spoke to schedule a meeting and just talk about those things like very mindfully and then just continue your practice. Otherwise, it can be very, very difficult to do a solitary retreat or a group retreat. A solitary is better because you do not have to talk. But group retreat can be challenging, especially if you do not have all the same schedule and you have to listen each other.
[00:16:08] Exercise: Well, we already talked about moving the body a little bit. You can do some day tai chi or yoga and the prostrations maybe already mentioned, we said at 6:00 to 6:30, everybody understand?
[00:16:37] Well, if you find the place empty, maybe in the evening also, you can be. The idea is just to be mindful of others, but doing postrations can also be a good thing for the body. But you shouldn’t do them with the motivation of doing exercise and becoming very fit.
[00:17:03] You remember Backchuk Rimpoche once told us that he start doing prostrations and then his wife said: You have these big muscles coming up. You look very good. And he said: I noticed on my motivation was getting straight. And do you have to take always the motivation for doing things. But a little bit of exercise, reading, is good to read if you feel very bored or you really want to do, it, is helpful. But try to read things that inspire you and that are conducive for the practice. If you’re start reading like long treatises about the Abhidhamma you’re going to probably get the very conceptual and it’s not going to help in your samatha retreat. So try to read things that inspire you, that motivate you to keep meditating, and to see, to see their world in a different way, to feel Lovingkindness for all… This kind of readings that are inspiring.
[00:18:13] Then eating: Check out your diet balance. We have a very good diet here. I normally think that a plant based diet is is very helpful, but you have to fine. Every person has a different constitution and if you are feeling very agitated or restless, try to find some warm food and some more heavy food, maybe some more carbohydrates. And then if you’re feeling very dull and sleepy all the time. Well, apart that you may be lacking steadily and you have to try to sleep and recover from that sleep deprivation that you’ve been carrying. If you’re just getting sleepy, try to eat more lighter food and colder food like salad, and this kind of thing. Well here, I think the food is good, but you have those syndications a little bit. But try to see what put makes to your meditation, and serve yourself.
[00:19:28] And then eating too little or avoiding heavy foods can contribute to lung problems. Conversely, eating heavy food can help you lung problems all right. Because in longest wind is when you feel like restless and kind of nervous. So you want grounding, but this meditation of drop is very good for that. Then, as soon as you start feeling tightness in your heart or your head, immediately bring down your attention to the navel or to their feet. OK. Don’t let it continue. This is very dangerous.
[00:20:12] Insomnia, and let me know in the interview place, how you feel. Insomnia, if you have insomnia, consider doing some exercise even at night or early in the morning. And if it’s appropriate for your body, try increasing the amount of food. So as your body and your mind balance and regulate your will, find also a little weight difference in your sleep. And because we will be spending a lot of time, basically meditating and not doing too much activity, then you will need less sleep. So it’s okay if you wake up in the middle of the night, but you feel rested. If you feel good, it means that’s the amount of sleep that your body needed at this time. So take that extra time you have to meditate, to do a supine posture session in your bed, and enjoy it. Don’t just start feeling worry about why I’m not sleeping eight hours. Okay?.
[00:21:22] But if you feel that you’re slipping the night, you’re waking up in the night and not feeling rested like you’re lacking sleep, then let me know so that we can adjust your diet and your meditation sessions.
[00:21:41] Naps: consider taking naps. Well, maybe after lunch would be a good time. Although this is very important, don’t take naps lying down after eating for at least three hours to three hours because it can create a problem of acid reflux. Same with meditation. After eating don’t going to supine posture. Very meditate seating. And it’s ok because we have a session after lunch. So if you can work a little bit, that’s helpful. And do walking meditation, then come and sit. Because this is a serious problem that myself and other friends had in the past because of doing too much supine and meditation after eating, then having this problem.
[00:22:37] Then health. Listen to your body and your mind. I am anticipating I already said this; and be smart if you have a symptom and may need medical care, observe your mind without much grasping and learn to relax, but if you feel that is something important, let us know it. During the retreat, we’re going to talk about meditative experiences or ñyanas, that’s the word used in Tibetan. And they are going to arise experiences, all kinds of experiences. So everybody’s different, and sometimes you might feel that you’re ill or that something is happening, but it’s just an experience arising out of meditation. The way we’re going to treat all these experiences, whether good or bad, whether it’s a pain or a fear or something arising like a memory or a bad thought that you were never imagined you would have… or something apparently good like your saying Buddha is ducking to you with colour lights around you and you’re having wonderful visions… All of these are just experiences. So don’t grasp to them. Don’t think you’re a very bad meditator or a very good Enlighted one, so just let them arise and pass, because in this way that your body, your mind is balancing and we’re kind of stretching the mind in a way, is coming up things start there that as a body, the mind settles. That can be experiences and sometimes they can be physical experiences that can be very, very, they can look very real. For example, during the samatha project, we had a friend and he had a tooth ache and he was in pain like he was certain he need go see the dentist, to do something, to pull it out or something. And so. he went on for several days and then they took him to the dentist in the city and then he said: you’re perfectly OK. You don’t have anything. But still, he had the pain, and then after some days it passed. But sometimes you really need medical attention, so you have to be wise and observe. Normally, these experiences don’t last too long. And if you just let them arise and pass that’s OK. But if you see they’re still there and you’re worried, better ask for help.
[00:25:32] And well, this is a way of life before retreat. To just sweep this before, but basically you’re already prepared for this expedition. And during this retreat, having few desires and contentment with the things that you have.
[00:26:02] Normally, when our mind gets distracted or agitated is because it’s obsessed with something, something we desire or something we crave for, or something we did not got and we want it, so we get obsessive. So learn to release those, release, relax and return to your meditation object.
[00:26:31] Then pure ethical discipline. I think here is very easy to practice, but still we can get kind of hooked with all those emotions and start fighting internally in our minds or feeling hunger or feeling all kinds of mental afflictions. So just remember that everybody here is doing their best practice. Let’s respect each other. And it’s very easy to keep pure discipline here because there’s not much to do. We will, I think, we come here with that wish of cultivate our bodies and mind. So there won’t be a problem…
[00:27:17] And we’re not going to speak so we won’t have to lie or say harsh speech and other things, right.
[00:27:31] Feel concerns of your activities, and intention to take charge of their runaway ruminating. Well, that’s not so much because then we stuck into a tubing mode, so. That’s what we want, but we want it to happen naturally, not because we are doing it; no control really is the control.
[00:27:59] Well, from the few concerns and few activities, just try to do as little as possible. But if you feel like you want to do something or you feel restless, breathing, going for a walk, doing some yoga, tai chi, chi gong, doing, maybe writing down… maybe you have a journal, kind of writing how you feel this kind of things can help. Maybe drawing. That’s one that I like doing drawing. So it’s so helpful.
[00:28:35] We suggest that to make the best use of your time in retreat just start working on during our conditions now; dimensions to the mind to make up for them the coming probation.
[00:28:47] Well, this was four before I didn’t receive this before. Take care of your affairs so that you truly leave them behind for the time in retreat. Maybe some of you weren’t able to. So if you need to take care of something during the retreats, just say do very mindfully and ear any disharmony you have. And importantly, think about what you hope to get out of retreat and start making your everyday lifestyle decisions about what to eat, drink and consumers’ entertainments based on supporting inspiration. Also, keep your eyes open to recognize when you’re undermining your goal.
[00:29:26] So these are helpful things to incorporate in your daily life. If you want to start living a contemplative life style when you come out of retreat, that is supportive to practice, and so that you can be ready to going to retreat any time again. That’s the idea. Not that it’s just an isolated retreat experience, but that you can connect this retreat. Some of you have done previous retreats and the idea is to connect in between. As we connect in between sessions, our practice, it’s important to keep this continuity. Then finding a lifestyle that is conducive for practice too. And we will talk this morning to tell us we come out of retreat.
[00:30:10] Let’s just take a moment to do a closing of this session. Reflect for a moment. We have discussed this morning…
[00:30:25] Set the intention to begin your retreat…With mindfulness… Practicing drop meditation every time you feel tightness… Throughout the day, during this meditation, so that we have a good foundation and relaxation…
[00:31:00] I’m releasing, I´m grounding… That we are aware of how we are starting our retreat in terms of living behind our concerns, taking care of our meals, exercising our body, sleeping well. And overall, just creating the conditions for our practice to flourish on its own…
[00:31:37] Set the intention to practice loving kindness for yourself and for others that are in this retreat with us… So, all we can all have a good shared experience… We dedicate this session in this way for highest aspirations for this retreat…
[00:32:10] Thank you. Let’s continue like this all day; is releasing practice, tried to explore it a little more before jumping into focus Shamata into an object. Let’s try to spend the whole day doing this drop, dropping and try to identify these feelings in the body. And then you can tell me also if you have questions tonight.
[00:32:36] Ok, so the interviews are going to be in my room upstairs. So you just go here upstairs and the first door on the left. So I have your names here, and those of you who have not registered write down your names on the sheet in the back of this. Thank you.
[00:04:20] Bueno, si no, puedes pedirlo.
Y vamos a repasarlo.
A veces te sentirás feliz, deprimido, aburrido.
[00:21:41] siestas: considere tomar siestas.
No tienes nada.
[00:31:00] Estoy soltando, estoy poniendo a tierra…
- Gracias. - Gracias.
